NOA89 is a transparent, colorless liquid photopolymer that cures under UV or visible (blue-violet) light. As a one-component, 100%-solids material, it offers many advantages when bonding optical components provided the bond line can be exposed to UV. Using NOA89 eliminates the premixing, drying or thermal cure common to other optical bonding systems. It cures extremely rapidly, depending on application thickness and UV energy received. NOA89 is used for glass-to-glass bonding, where it provides possibly the best bond, or as a surface coating. It has outstanding clarity, low shrinkage and slight flexibility, making it superior to other products for optical bonding. These properties are essential for producing high-quality optical assemblies and ensuring long-term performance as environmental conditions change. NOA89 cures under UV light from 310 to 395 nm, with peak absorption at 365 nm. Energy for full cure is 3.5 J/cm2 of long-wave UV. In many optical applications, curing is typically a two-step process. First, a short pre-cure should locate the bond while allowing slight adjustment without disturbing alignment; this is followed by a longer UV cure to achieve full crosslinking and solvent resistance. Pre-cure takes 10 seconds with a 100-W mercury lamp at 6 inches. If more alignment time is needed, lower light intensity extends this. Full cure takes 5 to 10 minutes with a 100-W mercury lamp. Pre-cure lets users quickly align and locate precision parts while minimizing fixtures. After pre-cure, excess adhesive can be easily cleaned off with a cloth dampened with ethanol or acetone. Assemblies can be inspected and rejects separated in methylene chloride. To separate, the bond must be soaked in solvent, usually overnight. Separation time depends on the degree of cure and bond area. Note that chlorinated solvents dissolve many plastics.

Storage Conditions:
Store in the original container, protected from light, at low temperature (5-22C), shelf life 4 months. If refrigerated, allow the adhesive to return to room temperature before use. Handle this material with care; read the Safety Data Sheet first, including related product information such as for alcohol, acetone or methylene chloride. Avoid prolonged skin contact; wash affected areas thoroughly with soap and water. If adhesive splashes into eyes, flush with water for 15 minutes, and seek medical attention. Use in a well-ventilated area; otherwise, an organic-vapor respirator meeting NIOSH requirements is recommended.
